There is so much talk recently around self-care. The topic can range from skin care regimens, to morning and evening routines, to literal simplification of…well…life. One of the lessons I’ve learned since our move has been one centered a simple life. For me that looks like a smaller home to clean and maintain, a smaller wardrobe to manage, and a smaller footprint in general. To some, the idea of less is discouraging; but for me having less has resulted in a much bigger life to live.
That’s why today I want to encourage you to think about ways you can simplify. A simple life can be self care you give yourself!

Simple Closet Organization
Confession: When we moved to our apartment I was concerned about clothes storage. We moved from a house with a double walk in closet. We had ample room. Our apartment closet, while still a walk-in, was about 1/3 the size. Our bedroom was large enough to hold a king-sized bed and two nightstands with a small desk. However, there was no room at all for a dresser or chest.
The first thing I did, and recommend to you, is to really take a hard look at your wardrobe situation. This has become a regular practice, and it has helped to create a more simple life. Every two or three months, I go through my clothes and really assess what has been worn recently, what may not fit, what may need repair, and what I may not even like. Because of this practice, I have narrowed down my clothing to fit within a very small space.
For winter, I have a couple of winter dresses, two or three blazers, a handful of sweaters, blouses, pants and skirts. Each item coordinates well with all of the other items in my closet. While this may sound boring to some, it has been a simple life hack that I would recommend to anyone. I have several pairs of winter boots that get me through the cold months, and these are my absolute staples. I can’t imagine living any other way.
Simplifying your closet can help you achieve a simple life, and a simple life is a form of self-care.

Folded Clothes Organization
While reducing hanging wardrobe staples means less to maintain, there is still a need for folded clothes storage. There are so many options online from beautiful woven baskets to portable rolling drawer systems, but one in particular has been exceptionally useful in our apartment closet.
This hanging organizer has seven compartments that can be separated into two hanging organizers. I have used it both ways, and it has been so incredibly useful to simplifying my closet that I’ve purchased two of them.
Each one offers three drawers, three open compartments, and mesh storage on the sides.
Wanting to alleviate the chaos in the search for a simple life proved challenging. But this organizer was a total win!

How is organization self care?
Now we come to it. How is organization self-care? You may be asking this question, and it’s a good one to ask! Let me explain what organization does for you.
First, having an organized clothing system, whether hanging clothes or folded clothes, give you back time. You cannot imagine the countless loss of time spent searching for those black socks, or that white camisole. Being able to see what you have and access it quickly, literally gives you back time. That is simple life self care at its finest.
Second, having an organized system also gives you sense of calm. On mornings that are a bit on the rushed side, having to run a quick errand, or prepare for a last minute dinner date, seeing what you have at the ready removes a lot of the stress of getting ready.
Think of the time it takes to maintain your laundry. We spend so much time prepping our clothing, cleaning them, drying them, steaming or pressing them. Often times, we stuff them into over-crowded drawers where they wrinkle or get lost in the chaos. Taking an extra five minutes when putting away your clothes neatly, is a form of simple life self care. In one intentional action you are both saving your future self time, and reducing stress.

Simple life self care
It’s easy to think of the term simple life as meaning a boring or stale life. But I think it’s much greater than that! When we simplify the everyday things of our lives, like our closets and drawers, we give ourselves back time. That is time we can spend intentionally somewhere else, or with someone else. We also reduce our own stress – and that friend, is self-care at its finest. The very best part is, it doesn’t cost a thing. It only takes a moment to love yourself enough practice a simple life of self care!
