When Downsizing from a house to an apartment, there are so many things to consider. You can find an abundance of information in the first two posts in the series. Links to parts one and two are posted at the end.
Choose Multi Purpose Furniture
Once it’s decided which furniture you won’t be taking, you’ll likely need to replace some items. We decided our leather sofa was not going to make the cut because of its size and weight. There is so much on the market these days. We knew we needed an appropriate replacement. Our new sofa had fill these five requirements:
- Lightweight
- Easy to transport
- Easy to move
- Possible built in storage
- Wearability & Washability
That’s where modular furniture came to mind. We wanted something we could configure in multiple ways to fit many living accommodations. It was an absolute must to incorporate storage. Washability, preferably machine washable, was top of our list.
Find Furniture That Fits the Bill
We chose to go with a Love Sac modular sofa. It couldn’t be easier! Simply choose the style sofa, determine how many sides / backs (interchangeable), how many seats, and your upholstery.
Each back doubles as a side. Cushions come in a choice of firmnesses, with or without storage. Additionally, the upholstery choices are amazing and so hard to choose from. There are other options as well, side table inserts, technology inserts, as well as other add-ons. This is not a sponsored post, but I encourage you to check out their website for all the information. They usually have holiday sales, and offer a military discount.
Personalize Your Choices
We purchased four seat bottoms, each with storage. When downsizing to a house to an apartment, storage is always at a premium. We knew we would need space for out of season clothes, extra bedding, board games, seasonal decor, etc. After one full year of use, we have only stored one extra blanket. We have three and one half storage bases still available to us.
We purchased seven arms and backs (interchangeable.). This configuration allows us to convert from a loveseat with chair and ottoman as seen here, to a full size, three seat sofa with ottoman. Another configuration would be an arrangement with armless chairs, or two armed chairs with two ottomans. The possibilities are endless, and each one is so incredibly functional!
Make Moving Easy
When downsizing to an apartment, or moving in general, the larger pieces of furniture are the hardest to maneuver. But not this LoveSac sofa. Simply unlatch all of the pieces, and each one is movable as an individual part of the whole. I am 5″ 5′ and 130 lbs and can assemble, disassemble, and move these sofa pieces by myself. That, folks, makes moving a breeze. They are light weight, easy to move, and if the upholstery gets dirty, simply toss it into the washer.
Go for Washability
When moving anywhere, keeping items clean is always a challenge. But not with this sofa. We have spilled orange juice, our elderly dog has had accidents, and we’ve found melted chocolate. Whenever there is an accident, we take the cover off, toss it in the washer with regular detergent on warm, and let it air dry. It does not shrink, or fade. The seams do not twist. And believe it or not, even though this is upholstery fabric, it dried in just a couple of hours. It could not be easier.
So when moving, worrying about keeping this sofa clean is going to be the least of your worries. I could not recommend it enough.
