caring for home:
I am all about simplifying my cooking routines. How about you? Whether it’s a faster way to peel vegetables or simple shortcuts that make my life so much easier, I am all in! I’m here for it! So today I have two quick (and I mean super quick) ways you can both simplify and upgrade your cooking experience by creating your own personalized seasoned salt.

01. Basic Mix
How often does a recipe say something like, “1/2 teaspoon salt. 1/4 teaspoon pepper?” It seems that most recipes call for a basic 2:1 ratio of the basic salt and pepper mix. In fact, I’ve discovered simply out of curiosity, that I generally use this ratio in most of my cooking.
It may not sound like a big deal, but having this basic seasoned salt at the ready will save time and simplify my cooking, as well. In a small marble salt cellar (you could use any salt cellar you prefer) mix 2 parts salt, and one part black ground pepper. Simply stir it to combine. That’s really all there is to it. You can use it on anything from scrambled eggs to baked potatoes – and literally anything in between.

02. Italian Mix
The second mix was one I tested out about a year ago, and I must say, I can hardly keep it in stock at our house. It’s basically the same recipe as the basic mixture, except I use Italian Herbs and Spices in place of the black pepper.
I use spices that come in a grinder, and I grind them fresh when I create the seasoned salt. It 2 parts Kosher or Sea Salt to 1 part freshly ground Italian spices. Again, simply stir them together in a salt cellar, and they are always at the ready. The best part is that the longer the seasonings are allowed to sit with the salt, the more the flavors combine. It is truly a beautiful thing.
Our favorite ways to use this seasoned salt is on steamed eggs, with butter on fresh sourdough bread, on top of pastas, and on a green dinner salad. It is one of the easiest ways to elevate even the simplest dish.

03. How seasoned salt is caring for Home
Sometimes we think of caring for home as the chores and tasks required to maintain our living spaces. Things like cleaning windows, sweeping floors, mowing lawns, and keeping up with laundry. But caring for home can be so much more than the daily chore list.
Caring for home can also be finding ways to make daily chores easier, like these shortcuts that make cooking easier. Even more importantly, they have the ability to create the feeling of home. They help create a place where the everyday mundane things are elevated to the special, extraordinary things.
The seasoned salts above take three ingredients and less than five minutes to make, but they add so much to the cooking experience. I encourage you to try them out. If you do, let me know what you think! I love hearing from you.
