discover home:
We are bombarded with Instagram images and Pinterest Perfection that it can leave us feeling like our homes are lacking. The truth about rental properties is vastly different. The wall colors, floor colors, hard surfaces and fixtures are rarely something we can change to meet our personal tastes. And so we’re left with builder-grade spaces that feel flat. So how do you go about making a rental property feel like home? Here’s how…

Is it worth it?
If you are living in a rental property, sometimes the idea of putting for the effort into a space that isn’t your own can feel overwhelming…and quite honestly, like a waste of time.
However, because these spaces we dwell in are meant to be our solace from the world, a place to rest when we’re weary, and a landing space to recharge our batteries, there really is no substitute for investing in our own private sanctuaries. Our homes are our anchors, or resting spots. And creating lovely spaces within those four walls really is the best kind of self-care we can give ourselves.
A soft place to land…
Okay, I know. Everyone says, “Just toss on another throw pillow, or add a faux fur blanket…” But the truth is, those cozy textures are what take our ‘big ticket items’ and hard surfaces to the next level.
Adding a throw blanket – bonus points if it’s faux fur – and a few beautifully curated and loved throw pillows can take a sofa or arm chair from utilitarian to an “ahhhh, I want to snuggle in here for a moment,” place to land after a long day.
Focus on pieces with personality that give the most impact. Think coziness, warmth, and personality. Textiles like velvet, cozy knits, faux fur, and brushed cottons all beckon you to sit a while and find rest. Be sure each piece is one you truly love and everything will work well together.

Think texture…
I find the most interesting pieces aren’t the hard surfaces of a rental property. The flooring, walls, and surfaces are generally builder-grade and lack pizzaz. That’s why adding texture is where the real interest comes from.
Don’t be afraid to mix a leather tray with brass handles with a set of stone book ends. And speaking of books, add those linen textured books to your decor. They make great risers for other styling pieces, add interest to your space, and generally have a story to tell.
Other textures are equally important, though. There is a beauty in the juxtaposition of a metal hurricane next to a glass vase of florals. Don’t be afraid to bring in a living-edge wooden bowl or a travertine candle holder. Each element of texture adds one more layer of interest that makes a rental property feel like home.

Fan Favorites…
I believe adding life to a space a rental property can’t be easier than with faux florals and stems. Whether you pick and dry hydrangeas, or purchase a few fan favorites from Amazon or the Hobby store, adding greenery takes a space from ordinary to alive!
Anything from greenery stems, a faux potted tree, some beautiful florals, or even a simple moss bowl all bring in a touch of life that will transform any rental property by layering in more interest, more movement, and more softness.

No matter the address…
No matter the address, whether rental house or small apartment, these pieces and placements will make your rental property feel like home. Because they add heart to the spaces we inhabit. And we all know that home, is where the heart is!
