caring for others:
It’s an old fashioned notion, but still, a tradition in our household nonetheless. Every year during October, I begin writing our Christmas cards. In some years we sent out over 100 Christmas cards. Each employee, friend, and loved one received a hand written, hand signed Christmas card. These days, it feels as if it’s an old fashioned notion, but I believe it’s one worth investing time in. Here’s why.
The power of the written note
There was a study completed on receiving a hand written note. I’m not sure who conducted this study, or their reason, but I’m glad they did. They found that receiving a hand written note in the mail, gives the same feelings as receiving a gift. Is that not amazing? That simply jotting down a few lines reminding someone that they are loved, they are thought of, they are remembered, can do that? There is power in the written note. And it is the power to change someone’s day!
It’s a personal touch
There was a trend a few years ago where people would send out their annual holiday letter. It was an update on each person; man, woman, and child throughout the year. Often times these letters were accompanied by a photo or two. We even had a clever family member who included little family trivia questions. It was a lot of fun to read.
These letters, were an extension of the hand written card. They were typically signed by the sending family, and were a joy to receive. It wasn’t that the letter was entirely written by hand, but that they took the time to share their lives. It was the personal touch.

The demonstration of effort
Sending a written note requires effort and time, doesn’t it? It requires us to have the materials on hand, and the presence of mind to quiet our thoughts long enough to jot down a few lines.
We’ve recently been watching Downton Abbey (yes, we’re almost a decade behind. It’s okay.). I love that the family receives post (mail) at the breakfast hour. Lord and Lady Grantham are often seen sitting at their desks scribing letters to relatives and acquaintances. News certainly traveled more slowly then.
There is a definite demonstration of effort in the letters and cards we send. Taking the time to sit down and write a personal, heart-felt message can be a way of cheering a lonely heart, celebrating an achievement, or sending love to another.
You don’t have to wax poetic
You don’t have to wax poetic or philosophical- unless that’s your true personality – then by all means, go for it. Wax on! The point is to simply send someone you’re thinking of a note that will encourage, motivate, challenge, or bless them. Don’t underestimate the power of the written note.
In a world ruled by digital communication such as email, DMs, text messages, Facebook posts, and Instagram reels, it is such a wonderful feeling to receive something in the mailbox other than junk mail or bills!
You don’t have to be a professional writer, you simply have to be you!

It’s an old fashioned notion
True. But in a world that spins too quickly and often leaves us feeling wind swept, it is so nice to take the time to jot down a few thoughts. It’s even nicer to be the recipient of these thoughts. Why not embrace an old-fashioned notion this year? See how much joy you can spread to others around you.
