As you know, we are contemplating our next move and currently our choices are mountain home or seaside location. The last post was built around my little daydream of what a seaside retreat would look like. Since I like being prepared, I’ve been playing with a little of this and a little of that – trying to pull together an idea of how to achieve a mountain home aesthetic. Once again, this design daydream is based on what we already own, not purchasing anything new.
Dark and moody…
If you ask me, a mountain home aesthetic would be filled with warm wood tones, cozy textures, a little drama and a whole lot of personality! Now, I’m not thinking about red plaids and bear window valances. That aesthetic has its place, but when I think about a mountain home aesthetic, I think more of a modern mountain home: Dark supple leather chairs, a cow-hide rug, touches of black, and lots of textures. I would want a mountain home aesthetic to be dark and moody.
Not wanting to purchase a lot of new products, I would like to use what I already have on hand first. That in mind, here are a few things that my vision of a modern mountain home aesthetic would include.
Warm, cozy textures…
I’m thinking about wooly knit blankets, fuzzy pillow textures, comfortable leather, and rough natural materials. Like the items I would choose if we go with a seaside location, these items would be flexible within the rooms of our next home. Vases used in the living space could easily move to a dining room or entry way. Styling pieces would also tell our travel story, like hand hewn marble dice, carved wooden pieces, and modern black accents.

Personal touches…
No matter what aesthetic you are trying to achieve, including personal touches and special treasures will always bring that feeling of home into any space. When you move frequently, creating the feeling of home is as important as the design aesthetic you choose. As I think about the items that will bring in personality and history to our modern mountain home, here are the items I know we’ll include: Wooden Russian dolls, a faux fur blanket, mountain souvenirs, a carved wooden turtle, warm wooly pillows, a soft cashmere throw, and our favorite coffee set.

Layers of comfort…
As with any home style, a modern mountain home aesthetic would also include layers and layers of comfort. Most homes have layering that begins at the floor and flows all the way to the windows. For a modern mountain home aesthetic, there are a couple of items we are sure to include. We are sure to include a cowhide leather rug, and velvet curtains. No bear valances necessary!

When you build out your home with the pieces you love, you’re sure to have options that will transform from one aesthetic to another. You will be able to mix and match the parts that bring in warmer, moodier vibes, and swap them out for lighter, brighter textures needed to create a softer home aesthetic.
Whatever your personal style aesthetic is, whether it’s a seaside retreat, modern mountain home, or penthouse suite, including your personal style and sentimental touches will always leave you feeling right at home no matter where you live!
