Some of our favorite scents capture the feeling of being a the beach. We love reminiscing about beach front hotel where we’ve stayed in the Outer Banks; the smell of the salt in the air, and sandy camp fires that burned long into the night.

Scent creates memories
When I was in school summer break started in late May and we didn’t go back to school until late August. Fall was literally around the corner. When my own children were in school, their summer didn’t start until the second week of June and they went back the end of July. We spent our days playing in the pool, hiking through Bernheim Forest, taking picnic lunches to the water park and walking through the zoo.
When back-to-school time came around, I wanted to created a break from summer to fall in their minds. Who wants to go back to school when there are still long lazy days of summer remaining? About a week before their first day of school, I would start to transition out our summer candle scent to a more fall-friendly fragrance. I put away my vanilla sandalwood candles and pulled out my apple scented or spice scented candles.
Even now that my children are grown, they will walk into our home and smell these familiar fragrances and say, “It smells like summer in here,” or “It smells like back-to-school time.” Fragrance has the power to transport us back to fond memories. Why not create those memories on a daily basis?
