Let’s talk animal print home decor. I know, I know. I just gave you thirty-two of the cutest animal print outfit inspirations, but these ideas have the potential to take your home decor up an entire notch!
You don’t have to decorate with cheetah, or leopard. Let’s be honest, that’s not going to fit into everyone’s personal aesthetic. I mean, if you’re going full Ralph Lauren, maybe a leopard print pillow or two would be amazing. But if you’re just looking to add a little punch to your sofa, your bedroom, your kitchen, or even your bathroom, then get ready. This is going to be a show stopper!
Let’s talk about shagreen
What is Shagreen? Shagreen is typically made from the hide of fish like sharks, or sting rays. There are some amazing synthetics on the market. And there are even embossed leather options with the pebbled texture that mimics sharkskin. It is a fantastic way to bring in a little ‘animal print’ into your home without going crazy. In fact, most shagreen and faux shagreen pieces come in neutrals, so they fit seamlessly into an already established home aesthetic.
I have owned the shagreen tray since 2020, and it still looks brand new. We use it for serving drinks, corralling trinkets, and as decor on book cases.
Some tried and true options include: shagreen photo frames, shagreen storage boxes, shagreen trays, and much more.
Animal Hide Rugs
One of the most unexpected elements you can add to a room is an animal hide rug. They can be readily found at places like Wayfair and Ikea, but these from Amazon are exceptional.
We wanted to add a touch of the unexpected to our kitchen and placed a dark brown cowhide rug on the floor. It is soft and warm underfoot, and everyone comments on it. Our bedroom unfortunately doesn’t have room at the foot of the bed for a bench or ottoman. Instead, we put down a sheepskin rug and I’ve never looked back. Even in the warmer summer months, there is something so incredibly comforting about walking across that soft, fuzzy goodness.
If you’re looking for animal print home decor, don’t overlook the obvious: animal hides.
Throw pillows to drool over
Let me just say, if you’re thinking of adding animal print home decor to your rooms, throw pillows are the easiest and least expensive way to do that. You can find high-end, up-scale looks for a fraction of designer shops. If you’re looking for good quality leathers, you will pay a bit more than a faux leather. But the quality and softness can’t be beat.
But you don’t have to go for leather. Faux croc or faux ostrich will add a touch of drama without breaking the bank. And if you just want a more traditional look, but with that same animal print flare…well, there are options for that, as well.
Practical Home Decor
I’ll be the first to admit, I am not a fan of the practical things being left on display. You can have tissues on the bathroom counter, but they look so much more stylish in a box cover. These leather and faux leather options are stunning.
Unexpected luxuries
Sometimes the little luxuries are the things that make the biggest impact. I remember several years ago having dinner with someone from our church. The table was set with plain white dishes and a simple napkin. But the thing I remember most is that she had a set of antique napkin rings she had inherited. They were made of pure bone.
Those napkin rings were what I was thinking of when I added the next pieces to this collection. These items are functional and lend a bit of excitement to the aesthetic of your home.
The leather napkin rings are soft and rustic, but still modern in their own right. While the black and white woven area rug looks like it may be standard issue, the black fringe and black stripes are pure leather. We have the 5×8 runner in our entry hall and it is a show stopper.
Utilitarian luxuries
The Truly Unexpected
If you’re looking for something a little more subtle, but still lends that unexpected luxury to your space, then you might consider these leather drink coaster options. They range in price, but each one is a great option. The first set is a modern graphic design, the second comes in a beautiful silver container by Jorge Jenson, and the last set are from Rustic Town and truly have that animal print home decor vibe.
So if you’re feeling inspired and you’re ready to take a walk on the wild side in your home decor this summer, these ideas will get you there fast.
If you’re looking for a little more inspiration, I highly recommend you looking into the design of Anouska Hempel.
I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to her design aesthetic. She mixes traditional, modern, and modern organic.
Bonus: Almost every room has a touch of animal print! Why not take a look?
Leave me a comment and let me know if you would ever use these ideas in your own home, and if so, which ones are your favorites!

Billie
